Prevent Virus attack

Autorun.inf

“autorun.inf” virus use the autorun feature of windows to spread themselves between the root directory of all the dirves on ur pc as well as any external drive. This causes the virus to run every time an external device lik a pen drive is inserted or every time u double-click the drive icon in windows explorer.

The forst step 2 remove the virus is 2 disable the Autorun from ur PC. To do this,

1) Click on ‘start > Run’

And type ‘regedit’

Scroll down to the key

‘HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Policies\ Explorer’

Double click ‘NoDriveTypeAutoRun’ on the right hand panel and change the ‘Value data’

From ‘91’ to ‘ff ’

Then again scroll down on the left hand panel to

‘HKEY_USER\ DEFAULT\ Software\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Policies\ Explorer’.

Here again change the ‘value data’ of ‘NoDriveTypeAutoRun’ from ‘91’ to ‘ff ’.

Exit from the registry editor by just closing it.

[Note: pls use backup before editing]

2) Then click on ‘start > Run’ and type ‘msconfig’

Here, disable all the unnecessary or unwanted programs.

3) Reboot the system to safe Mode (Press F8 on starting) and delete all the autorun.inf files from all drives in My computer and also from external storage drives.

4) Here is a trick you can use to prevent the autorun.inf files from beginning generated again,

Create a folder named ‘autorun.inf’ in every drive and partition’s root folder,also do the sme on every pendrive u have.

This will not allow a file by the name of ‘autorun.inf’ to be cteated a the system will not allow any 2 files or folder of the same name.

5) Finaly Reboot ur computer in Normal mode, install and update ur antivirus and scan ur computer. Keep ur computer updated for the latest patches frm Microsoft at all times using the windows update feture.

simple techniques to remove your temporary files

Start > Run > Type %temp% in the text field (including %). You can delete all the files from that folder. In case, a file is currently used by a running program, you will not be able to delete it. Do it at a later time, or when you stop every program that is running.

And just press the Up button from this folder and you will see a folder named “Temporary Internet Files”. Guess, you know what to do.

2. Start > Run > Prefetch : You can delete all the files from this folder.

3. Start > Run > Temp : Same as prefetch.

4. You can search for a temporary files yourself by typing *.tmp in the Find files or folders. But this is risky.

To clear history, cache, cookies..etc.etc… you can do it easily from the browser itself. One recommendation, do defrag your hard drives frequently, at least once a week. Do Disk Cleanup. And you can have certain software for junk file removal and registry cleaner.

About Indic Transliteration

Google Indic Transliteration offers an option for converting Roman characters to the Malayalam characters. This lets you type Malayalam words phonetically in English script and still have them appear in their correct alphabet. Note that this is not the same as translation -- it is the sound of the words that are converted from one alphabet to the other, not their meaning. For example, typing "avan" transliterates into Malayalam as:

1. How do I use transliteration to type in Malayalam?

The transliteration feature is controlled by the button at the top left corner of the text box.

This button toggles the transliteration feature on and off. (You can also use Ctrl-G as a shortcut.) When it is on, it affects the text box contents. The letters of a word will appear as you type them until you reach the end of the word. As soon as you type a space or a punctuation mark, the letters will be converted to Malayalam characters, like this:

The transliteration will attempt to match the sounds of the letters as accurately as possible between the two alphabets. However, if you find that it is incorrect, you can fix it.

2. How do I correct and edit words?

When you find a word you want to change, just click on it once, using the left mouse button. This displays a short menu of alternate spellings, as well as an option to switch back to the original Roman characters you typed, or to edit the word further.

If you choose the "Edit..." option, you'll see the word in an Edit mode that provides on-the-fly suggestions for the next letter in the sequence. If a button is green, that means that the letter is phonetically similar to the last typed syllable, and clicking on the button will replace it.

If you want complete control over the choice of letters, click the keyboard icon to the right of the word you're editing. A full on-screen keyboard comes up, and you can simply click the letters you want to insert them into your text.

Matras (accent marks) are shown with dotted circles to indicate that they can be applied to different letters. To use them, first click the letter you want to use, then click the matra you want to apply to it. For example, to type വ്യാ pronounced "vyaa",

How to Empty My Recent Documents Automatically on Log off?

All the files you open will be stored in your user profile in a hidden folder named My Recent Documents. This is really annoying and a treat to our privacy! We can make this folder auto cleared on logoff using a single registry change.

1. Click Start > Run > Type in regedit

2. In the Registry editor navigate to the following key.

HKEY_Current_User > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Policies > Explorer

3. Right click on the Right Pane > New > Dword Value & name it as ClearRecentDocsOnExit .

4. Double Clcik on it & se the value to 1 .

This will clear the My Recent Documents Folder automatically on logoff.

To Revert back either delete the Dword value or set the value to 0.

Change the font wondows xp displays in the wondows explorer

Windows XP uses the same font for desktop icons and Windows Explorer. If the font is too hard to read, you can change its size or the font itself with a few mouse clicks. Here's how to adjust the look of your system fonts.

Windows Explorer and My Computer display the same font that Windows XP uses for icon titles on your desktop: Tahoma, 8 point. If you want to change the font or font size used in Windows Explorer, follow these steps:

Access the Display Properties dialog box by right-clicking the desktop and selecting the Properties command.
Select the Appearance tab and click the Advanced button.
Select Icon from the Item drop-down list.
Use the Font drop-down arrow to select a font from the list.
Click OK twice -- once to close the Advanced Appearance dialog box and once to close the Display Properties dialog box.

You can see the new font by launching Windows Explorer or My Computer. If you don't like what you see, repeat the steps and select a different font.

Prevent a shutdown of a Windows XP system

By default, at three o’clock every morning Windows XP’s Automatic Updates tool contacts the Windows Update site and automatically downloads and installs updates for your system. However, that cannot happen if other people who use the computer shut it down at the end of the day. Fortunately, you can prevent anyone from shutting down Windows XP with a little registry tweak. Here’s how:

Launch the Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).
Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer.
Right-click the Explorer subkey and select New | DWORD Value.
Name the key NoClose and press [Enter] twice.
Type 1 in the Value Data text box and click OK.

To enable the setting, close the Registry Editor and restart your system. Once your system restarts, you will not be able to it shut down by clicking the Shutdown button on the Start menu. This will prevent most users from inadvertently shutting down the computer.

When you do want to shut down your system, just access Task Manager by pressing [Ctrl][Alt][Del], then pull down the Shut Down menu and select the Turn Off command.

Note: Since editing the registry is risky, be sure you have a verified backup before saving any changes. This tip applies to both Windows XP Home and Windows XP Professional.

Removing unused device drivers from Windows XP machines

Follow these steps to view and remove these unnecessary device drivers:

Press [Windows]+[Break] to bring up the System Properties dialog box.
Select the Advanced tab and click the Environment Variables button.
Click the New button below the System Variables panel.
In the New System Variable dialog box, type devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices in the Variable Name text box and 1 in the Variable Value text box.
Click OK to return to the System Properties dialog box and then click OK again.
Select the Hardware tab and click the Device Manager button.
In Device Manager, go to View | Show Hidden Devices.
Expand the various branches in the device tree and look for the washed out icons, which indicate unused device drivers.
To remove an unused device driver, right-click the icon and select Uninstall.

Using the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility in Windows XP

From the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility window, locate the application in the list and click the Remove button.
Once the application has been removed, click the Exit button to close the utility.

You may now reinstall the application.

Boosting ur Word 2007

Use Word 2007’s new Reading Highlight feature to highlight words in your document

If you've ever wished you could use Word's Find feature to search for a particular word and highlight all occurrences of that word—then have the document stay highlighted even after you turn off Find—you can now with Word 2007's new Reading Highlight feature.

When you use Find's Reading Highlight feature, the highlighting of all occurrences of a word or phrase in your document will remain active until you clear it—even after you close the Find dialog box. Also, you can choose the highlight color.

For example, let's say you receive your new product's user manual and you want to review the document's warranty information. Rather than read the entire document to find the appropriate sections, you can have Find highlight every instance of the word

warranty for you. Follow these steps:

1. Click the Home tab and then click the Text Highlight Color command in the Font group.

2. Select the Yellow box.

3. Open the manual document and press [Ctrl]F.

4. In the Find What text box, type

warranty.

5. Click the Reading Highlight drop-down list and select Highlight All.

6. Click Close.

Save time by using Word 2007's built-in cover pages

Prior to Word 2007, you had to manually set section breaks at the top of your document before you could create a cover page with a different page format from the rest of your document. With Word 2007's built-in cover pages, the section breaks are already formatted for you. Follow these steps to add one of the built-in cover pages to your document:

1. Click the Insert tab.

1. Click the Cover Page button.

2. Scroll down and click Sideline.

3. Select the Title field and add your own title.

4. Click to select the Subtitle field and add your own subtitle.

5. Click the list arrow on the Date field and select the date from the calendar.

6. Click anywhere in page two of your document.

8. Point to Bottom Of Page and click Plain Number 3.

9. On the Design tab, click the Page Number button.

10. Click Format Page Numbers.

11. Click in the Start At text box and change the 1 to 0. Click OK.

12. On the Design tab, click the Close Header And Footer button.

This feature is not supported in Word 2007 Compatibility Mode documents.

Although Word 2007 comes with some sophisticated built-in header styles, most documents do not require such complex headers. Sometimes all that is needed is a quick way to add your name and page number to the top of each page.

Word 2007 makes it easier to add a simple header, with fewer mouse clicks than previous versions. For example, to create a simple header for a report, follow these steps:

1. On the Ribbon, click the Insert tab.

2. Click Header in the Header & Footer Group.

3. Click Edit Header.

In the blank header area, you can add your name and page numbers. To do so, follow these steps:

1. Press Ctrl+R.

2. Type your name and press Enter.

Change the default margins of your Word 2007 documents

Word 2007 makes it easy to change your default margins. For example, if your organization requires all documents to have one-inch margins, you can set it once, and then make it the default setting for all new documents. Follow these steps to make the changes stick:

1. On the Ribbon, click the Page Layout tab.

2. Click the Margins tool in the Page Setup group.

3. Click Custom Margins.

4. Change your right and left margins to one inch.

5. Click the Default button.

6. Click Yes.

All new documents based on your document's template will have one-inch margins. If you need to temporarily change the margins to one of the standard choices—for example, two-inch left and right margins—follow these steps:

The left and right margins for the document you are currently working on will adjust to two inches.

Let Word 2007 proofread your documents with a click of the mouse

Word 2007 automatically proofreads your document for spelling, grammar, and style errors as you type and lets you correct the errors as they occur or at the end of your Word session. You can customize how Word proofreads your documents by setting the desired options before you work on your document.

For example, suppose you want Word to make suggestions before automatically changing a misspelled word, as well as identify gender-specific words in your text. Follow these steps:

1. Click the Office button and then click the Word Options button.

2. Click Proofing.

3. Click the AutoCorrect Options button in the right pane.

4. In the AutoCorrect tab, clear the Automatically Use Suggestions From The Spelling Checker check box. Click OK.

5. Click the Writing Style Settings button.

6. Scroll to Style and click the Gender-Specific Words check box.

7. Click OK twice.

When you are ready to proofread your document, click the Proofing Errors button in the status bar to sort through and correct any errors that Word has found.

3. Click Save.

4. Under Save Documents, click the Browse button next to the Default File Location text box.

5. Navigate to and click the folder you want to be your default.

6. Click OK twice.

If you save a new document in Word 2007, it will save in Word 2007 format. If you know you will be sharing your document with users of older versions, such as Word 2002 or Word 2003, you may want to set the default to the older format to ensure that those users will be able to read your newly created documents. Follow these steps:

1. Click the Office button.

2. Click the Word Options button.

3. Click Save.

4. Under Save Documents, select Word 97-2003 Document (*.doc) from the Save Files In This Format drop-down list.

5. Click OK.

By default, all new files will save in a format that users of earlier Word releases can read.

Transfer information to other documents using Word 2007’s View Side By Side feature

When you need to copy information from one Word 2007 document to another, you could use the Copy button to copy the selected information from one document, open the destination document, click where you want to insert the information, and then click the Paste button. Or you could just right-click and drag the information from one document to another. Word 2007’s View Side By Side feature makes it easy to do just that.

Let’s say you want to copy a picture in Document A to Document B. Follow these steps:

1. Open Document A.

2. Open Document B and scroll to where you want to insert the picture.

3. Click the View tab.

4. Click the View Side By Side command in the Window group.

5. Click in Document B and then click Window on the View tab.

6. Click Synchronous Scrolling to turn it off.

7. Select the picture in Document A.

8. Right-click and drag the selected picture to where you want to insert the picture in Document B.

9. Release the mouse button and select Copy Here.

After copying your selections, you can turn off the View Side By Side feature by clicking Window on the View tab of the active window and then clicking the View Side By Side command.

Customize the Word 2007 Ribbon with these quick tips

If the Word 2007 Ribbon is taking up too much space on your desktop and you’d rather have one toolbar displaying the most frequently used commands, you can set up Word 2007 to do just that.

First, to hide the Ribbon, press Ctrl+F1 or double-click the Home tab. The Ribbon will disappear from view, leaving only the Ribbon tabs and the Quick Access toolbar visible on the screen. When you need to use a command on the Ribbon, click the appropriate tab to display the Ribbon group where the command is located. When you finish with the command, click the tab to hide the Ribbon again.

If you frequently use certain commands on the Ribbon, you can add them to the Quick Access toolbar. For example, follow these steps to see how simple it is to add Date & Time to the Quick Access toolbar:

1. Click the Customize Quick Access Toolbar button found to the right of the Office button.

2. Click More Commands.

3. Choose All Commands from the Choose Commands From drop-down list.

4. Click Date & Time.

5. Click the Add button and click OK.

If you repeatedly display the Ribbon to format selected text, use the Mini toolbar rather than the Ribbon. The Mini toolbar displays automatically when you point to selected text. You can also format without the Ribbon by right-clicking any part of your document. This will display a shortcut menu of formatting commands that relate to the part of the document you clicked. For example, right-clicking the footer will display the Edit Footers shortcut menu.

Assemble professional documents with Word 2007’s building blocks

When you need to quickly produce an important report in Word, you don’t want to spend time formatting it. But this doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice presentation for substance. You can still achieve a professional look by assembling the document from Word 2007’s built-in components.

Before you begin writing your report in Word 2007, follow these steps to add headers, footers, a confidential watermark, and a cover page:

1. Open a blank Word 2007 document and click the Insert tab.

2. Click the Quick Parts command in the Text group and select Building Blocks Organizer.

3. Scroll to the Footer gallery, select Tiles, and click the Insert button.

4. Click the Close Header And Footer button.

5. Click the Insert tab on the Ribbon.

6. Click the Quick Parts command and select Building Blocks Organizer.

7. Scroll to the Header gallery, select Tiles, and click the Insert button.

Use Word 2007’s contextual spell checker to avoid embarrassing errors

Word’s spell checker can help you cut down on spelling errors, but what if you type the word right, and it should be write? Until Word 2007, the spell checker would have ignored the error.

For those of us who consistently type

to for too, there for their, or site for sight, Word 2007 has a new feature that not only checks for the correct spelling but also for the correct context. Follow these steps to activate the contextual spell checker:

1. Click the Office Button.

2. Click the Word Options button.

3. Click Proofing.

4. In the When Correcting Spelling And Grammar In Word section, select the Use Contextual Spelling check box.

5. Click OK.

If you type Now is the time for all good people to come to the aid of there country, Word will underline there in blue. You can then right-click the word to select the correct spelling: their.

Check the compatibility of your Word 2007 documents

Before you send out that beautifully formatted Word 2007 document, it's a good idea to check the compatibility of your document with other versions of Word.

For example, if your document contains SmartArt (a feature that is not supported in earlier versions of Word), when a Word 2003 user opens your document, the SmartArt graphics will be converted into a single object that can't be edited.

To have Word check the document for features that are not supported in earlier versions, follow these steps:

1. Click the Office button.

2. Point to Prepare in the left pane and click Run Compatibility Checker.

Word 2007 provides a report that lists the document's unsupported features and details what you can do, if anything, to make your document readable in earlier versions.

If you frequently e-mail documents in compatibility mode, you can have Word automatically run a compatibility check every time you save a file. To do so, select the Check Compatibility When Saving In Word 97-2003 Formats check box in the Word Compatibility Checker dialog box before clicking OK to close the compatibility report.

Speed Up Boot and Shutdown Times Hack #3

Shorten the time it takes for your desktop to appear when you turn on your

PC, and make XP shut down faster as well.

No matter how fast your PC boots, it’s not fast enough. Here are several

hacks to get you right to your desktop as quickly as possible after startup.

Perform a Boot Defragment

There’s a simple way to speed up XP startup: make your system do a boot

defragment, which will put all the boot files next to one another on your

hard disk. When boot files are in close proximity to one another, your system

will start faster.

On most systems, boot defragment should be enabled by default, but it

might not be on yours, or it might have been changed inadvertently. To

make sure that boot defragment is enabled on your system, run the

Registry

Editor

[Hack #83] and go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Dfrg\BootOptimizeFunction

Edit the Enable string value to Y if it is not already set to Y. Exit the Registry

and reboot. The next time you reboot, you’ll do a boot defragment.

I’ve found many web sites recommending a way of speeding

up boot times that might in fact slow down the amount of

time it takes to boot up and will probably slow down

launching applications as well. The tip recommends going to

your

C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch directory and emptying it every

week. Windows uses this directory to speed up launching

applications. It analyzes the files you use during startup and

the applications you launch, and it creates an index to where

those files and applications are located on your hard disk. By

using this index, XP can launch files and applications faster.

So, by emptying the directory, you are most likely slowing

down launching applications. In my tests, I’ve also found

that after emptying the directory, it takes my PC a few seconds

longer

to get to my desktop after bootup.

Hack Your BIOS for Faster Startups

When you turn on your PC, it goes through a set of startup procedures in its

BIOS before it gets to starting XP. So, if you speed up those initial startup

procedures, you’ll make your system start faster.

You can speed up your startup procedures by changing the BIOS with the

built-in setup utility. How you run this utility varies from PC to PC, but you

typically get to it by pressing the Delete, F1, or F10 keys during startup.

You’ll come to a menu with a variety of choices. Here are the choices to

make for faster system startups:

Quick Power On Self Test (POST)

When you choose this option, your system runs an abbreviated

POST

rather than the normal, lengthy one.

Boot Up Floppy Seek

Disable this option. When it’s enabled, your system spends a few extra

seconds looking for your floppy drive—a relatively pointless procedure,

especially considering how infrequently you use your floppy drive.

Boot Delay

Some systems let you delay booting after you turn on your PC so that

your hard drive gets a chance to start spinning before bootup. Most

likely, you don’t need to have this boot delay, so turn it off. If you run

into problems, however, you can turn it back on.

Fine-Tune Your Registry for Faster Startups

Over time, your Registry can become bloated with unused entries, slowing

down your system startup because your system loads them every time you

start up your PC. Get a Registry clean-up tool to delete unneeded Registry

entries and speed up startup times. Registry First Aid, shown in

Figure 1-3,

is an excellent Registry clean-up tool. It combs your Registry for outdated

and useless entries and then lets you choose which entries to delete and

which to keep. It also creates a full Registry backup so that you can restore

the Registry if you run into a problem.

Registry First Aid is shareware and free to try, but it costs $21 if you decide

to keep using it. Download it from

After you clean out your Registry, you might want to try compacting it to get

rid of unused space. The Registry Compactor, available from

http://www.

rosecitysoftware.com/RegistryCompactor/index.html, will do the trick. Compacting

your Registry reduces its size and decreases loading time. It’s shareware

and free to try, but it costs $19.95 if you decide to keep it.

Speed Up Shutdown Times

It’s not only startup times that you’d like to speed up; you can also make

sure that your system shuts down faster. If shutting down XP takes what

seems to be an inordinate amount of time, here are a couple of steps you can

take to speed up the shutdown process:

Don’t have XP clear your paging file at shutdown. For security reasons,

you can have XP clear your paging file (

pagefile.sys) of its contents

whenever you shut down. Your paging file is used to store temporary

files and data, but when your system shuts down, information stays in

the file. Some people prefer to have the paging file cleared at shutdown

because sensitive information, such as unencrypted passwords, sometimes

ends up in the file. However, clearing the paging file can slow

shutdown times significantly, so if extreme security isn’t a high priority,

you might not want to clear it. To shut down XP without clearing your

paging file, run the Registry Editor and go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory

Management

Change the value of

ClearPageFileAtShutdown to 0. Close the Registry

and restart your computer. Whenever you turn off XP from now on, the

paging file won’t be cleared, and you should be able to shut down more

quickly.

Turn off unnecessary services.

Services take time to shut down, so the

fewer you run, the faster you can shut down. For information on how to

Nokia Mobi Tricks

12 tips before you buy Nokia N95

Physical attributes: It is wider than say Nokia N73 and you would think it would be heavier because all those extra features crammed into the phone. It feels surprisingly lighter, and fits in your palm nicely, despite its rectangular, digital camera type design.
Screen: The 240 x 320 pixels, 2.6 inch screen is bright and big, and in horizontal format, it can be used to watch video clips, or type out quick memos using the bundled Quick Office and a Nokia Wireless keyboard. The generous screen size is good for catching up on MLB scores, keeping tabs on GigaOM and checking out Digg.
Voice: If your primary concern is voice quality, the quad band phone gets very enthusiastic thumbs up from me, and it manages to pick up signals even in elevators.
Dialpad: The dial-pad is wide and evenly spaced and feels comfortable when thumbing out those text messages.
Navigation & Media Key: The navigation keypad is also pretty easy to use and is clutter free, though “accept call” and “end call” keys are small. The Media key is finally doing what it says, and opens up a lush interface, which basically lets you navigate through most of the important apps – music player, FM radio, photo gallery and so on.
Camera: If you like taking a lot of photos, and don’t want to carry a separate digital camera, then the point-and-shoot features of N95 should suffice. The Carl Zeiss brand doesn’t really mean anything to me – I go by how the photos look to my naked eye. I find the quality of photos stunning. Camera is simple to use, and the built in Lifeblog software can get the photos to your Flickr account in a jiffy.
Video Recorder and Video Playback: I have been using Nokia N73 to do video interviews with Silicon Valley executives, and found that it sufficed my needs. The N95 however is a 2X improvement in video quality with better audio-pick up as well. Nokia has been smart in keeping the user interface consistent so there are no new tricks to learn.

The videos can be played-back on a regular television via a special cable that comes bundled in the box, and the quality of video is adequate, considering the source.
Music Player: This is the single best feature of Nokia N95. The sound quality is stable, smooth and not too loud, yet rich at the same time. Being one of those few who has tried I can safely say that Nokia N95 is their best music phone. Ever!

The big reason for that is the standard headphone jack, which allows me to plug in any one of my Ultimate Ears or Shure headphones/ear plugs. I simply hated the dongle-to-earphone hook-up. With this new standard audio jack, I can plug the headphones right into the phone.

When combined with the wired remote, my Shure SE 310 headphones have a new friend, one that would make me leave the iPod nano at home. The 2GB microSD card holds most of my current favorites, though I had to go through the burn-rip-load process. I will dig into the musical options of N95 later.
WiFi and Networking: N95 is one of the most connected devices on the market at present. It has the usual laundry list of connectivity options including Bluetooth and infrared.

While the HSDPA 3G options are pretty much useless to those of us in the US, we can certainly appreciate the mini USB connector (what took Nokia so long to finally support this?) that makes transferring files from your computer to the device a breeze, especially on a Mac.

WiFi is where N95 shines, thanks in part to new software applications that Nokia is bundling with the phone. The home screen of the phone has a WiFi scan option that allows you to easily find and connect to WiFi networks. No mucking around with the connectivity menu and getting the WiFi to to work. Full marks to Nokia for getting this right.
Internet Telephony: I loved the VoIP calling features of N80i, even if I didn’t care for the phone itself. I am glad that the native VoIP support is built into this device. While I have not been able to make it work with my Asterisk set-up just yet, the Truphone app is ready to go on this device.

I got the SIPphone to work as well, by simply copying the set-up from Nokia N80i. My Gizmo account is working, so I guess this feature is getting my personal blessing.
Battery Life: If you are looking for a reason to not spend $750 on a phone, well here is a good reason. The battery on this device simply sucks. It doesn’t even last the whole day, and that is when you are using it in GSM mode, WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS turned off. Nokia needs to fix this as quickly as possible otherwise, N95 could become a PR nightmare for them.

Even light email usage and web surfing starts sucking N95’s battery like Nick Nolte hitting the sauce. If you still insist on buying this phone, then buy a few extra chargers and have them littered around your house, office and car.

No Mail 4 Exchange support: And lastly, what I really hate most about this phone is the terrible email support. I don’t care for Nokia’s internal email client. On my N73, E61 and E70, the Mail 4 Exchange software works flawlessly, syncing over the air with our company Zimbra server. No such luck with N95.

You can install the older version of Mail 4 Exchange client, which can sync your contacts, calendars and email, but when you try and open the email, you get an error message: Feature not supported. Other push email clients like Seven’s AlwaysOnEmail client doesn’t work either with this latest version of Symbian S60 operating system.

Your best option right now is RoadSync by Dataviz, but it is going to set you back by about $99. But hey if you are going to spend $750 on a phone, what’s another $99.

Bottomline: Despite all those fancy features, lack of Mail 4 Exchange support and terrible battery life are reasons enough for me to stay away from this so-called Multimedia Computer. A 2 GB micro SD card, $99 for RoadSync, a couple of extra batteries and chargers – you are looking at $1000 in total spend. A four-figure phone…. That’s too much for a gadget freak like me.

The Service Provider (SP) Lock
The Service Provider (SP) Lock menu is used to lock the cell phone to the SP's SIM card. Once the cell phone is locked to a specific operator, if one inserts a SIM card from a different operator the phone will refuse to accept it! The cell phone will however accept another SIM car from the same operator.
To activate/deactivate this lock one needs a special secret code that is not available to the end user.

Here is how to activate the menu:
<**< Lock to Network? if pressing yes you have 5 attempts to enter NCK.
<**<< Lock to Network subset? if pressing yes you have 5 attempts to enter NSCK.
Warning: Your phone can be locked to a service provider FOREVER by doing this! If an invalid code is entered all five times, the menu will exit and be deactivated! Any further attempt to activate the NCK/NSCK lock Menu will result in the response "Not allowed"! However the NCK/NSCK lock can be recover through a direct clearing in the EEPROM.

Access menu without Sim card

To access to the menu in your phone without having a card inside do the following: type **04*0000*0000*0000# When display say "Wrong Pin" press NO and you have access to the all menus: Info, Access, Settings, Calculator, Clock, Keylock On?, Mail, Phone book. NOTE if you try this on your phone may stop at Keylock On? menu and you´ll have to take your battery out to turn the phone on again. And this will not care about Phone lock !

A way to (un)lock your cell phone on to the network(subset):
1. Press <**<
2. Then on the display appear and give you two choices: Lock to Network ? and Lock to Network subset? (Use arrow keys to select)
3. Enter the NCK number (code is provided by the SP)
4. You have 5 attemps to do this
5. Then your cell phone will work 'only' with the network

Bat. level indicator when turned OFF...
When the gh688 is turned off and the phone is not changing - the bat. level can
be seen for a short period of time by pressing the 'NO' key quick once (it has
to be quick!) and then wait for about 2 sec. The bat. level will now be shown in
the display at its normal position.

Go to the 'Edit list' menu under 'networks'. The phone say 'please wait'
(searching for other networks). When finished, Press the < key once, then YES
twice. Now the phone displays the full list. Browse through the list with the <
> keys.

I have tested the function Lock to SP... At least on the 337 there's a submenu: Enter SPCK-code. There are 5 attempts, which is showed (05 attempts). At final attempt the phone beeps as a warning, 'this is the final try', when entering the menu... Wrong code exits the menu, so you are not stuck in something... When you have tried to enter the code (wrong) all five times, the menu is deactivated, and you'll get: 'Not allowed' when entering <-**<-
A "secret test mode" can be accessed on the GH337. There seems to be two methods:> * < < * > * displays software version, such as 940810 1310
> * < < * < * displays software version, such as 951024 1054
After entering this mode, the < and > keys scroll through a menu. There seems to be different menus for different versions of software.

Software version number are apparently a date and time stamp.

940810 1310 version commands:

TEXT CHECK - shows 254 messages in current language

INIT EEPROM MMI - resents NVRAM settings (User Settings).

Other, probably more recent version:

FLASH - will restart the phone, to the point of entering PIN numbers.You can't kill a 337 when pressing YES while it says "FLASH?", you must connect it to 5/12 volts first to be able to erase the flash-memory.

1-ROW TEXTS - scroll through 174 single line text messages with < and >

Power on phone by pressing "NO/ENDpwr".
When performing its powerup sequence the phone will send two ">>"
(ASCII 62 decimal) characters. Within 1 second, reply to it by
sending the 4 character sequence "TP1".

Notes on the PH 337
1. Calculator mode is NOT available on all PH sw versions.

4. The instruction LIME returns ERR but does not screw up phone
5. The instruction IMEI returns the IMEI no.
6. Pressing YES in response to FLASH? does screw up the unit.

Sony Ericsson 318/338 Secret Codes

The Latest Software Version is under Phone Info.
To fine tune sound and clean up any echos, place the 388 into the car kit HF 2600.
Then close all windows, engine off and type * # * # 3. The E 388 will fine-tune itself in about a few seconds.

Accessing the Service Program that is not provided with the 388.

DO NOT write or read from the IMEI or SPCK area! If you try that you can send the phone to service at once, because you will automatically write FE or EF to EVERY cell in the EEPROM. In other words, all the calibration values for the radio is overwritten... (NOT good)

To FlashProgram a 388:
1. Connect the 388 to Cable with RS232/TTL converter.

3. Power ON, wait for "2" and send "OB" to the phone. DO NOT Press ENTER.
4. R should be on screen.
5. send pre_xxx.bin to the MS.
6. You should recieve a ">".
7. send "0B" again.
8. R should be on screen
9. send prodload.bin to the MS.
10. recieve ">".
Done, I don't have the above files so please don't ask for them.
Interesting Informating (well I thought so :)
The names on the files, sj.....X45 tells you a couple of things. "sj" stands for Sofia-Jane, thats the internal name for the model and x45 stands for "sub-model". The 388 is called model 4/5. The latest 337 phones is called "cr", like in Cost Reduction. They rebuilt the oscillator from a bought-in to one built up with discrete components and that was cheaper.
Programming Channel Indicator or RBS
To enable, send the following command:

Wait for the OK prompt, power off* the phone and disconnect it from the interface cables. Powerup and browse through the menus.

a. When the phone is idle, this shows "Bxxx". "B" stands for "Broadcast channel" (a logic GSM channel)b. When a phonecall is in progress, this shows "Sxxx". S stands for "Stand Alone Dedicated Control Channel" SDCCH for short.
c. When the phoncall in up, this shows "Txxx". "T" Stands for Traffic channel. The "xxx" thing is the channel number, 1-124.

2. This shows Rx Level. The values displayed is from 0 to 63. Rx Level is a indicator on how good your reception is for the moment. 0 is a signal strength of -110dBm. 63 is approx -45 to -50dBm.RXLEV is measured in dBm in such a way that incoming signal equals -110.5+RXLEV so that a RXLEV at 50 equals an incoming signal strenght at -50.5 dBm (plus or minus max deviation 0.5dBm)

4. This shows the timeslot used for the moment. You can see it when making a call.

5. This shows Rx Quality. Rx Quality is a measurement of how much error correction is required to the speech. 0 indicates none and as the figure rises you hear more pings and pongs on the speech as large parts of the frame are missing. If you have more RxQ then 5, you are on good way to loose your call. RxQuality reads 0-7.RXQUAL is measured by using a table wereas the biterrorrate or BER is interesting and measured in %

Co-incidentely this tells you how far you are from the base site in 550metre chunks, up to the theoretical max of 35.2km.

Remote Control K750i / W800i

Only just discovered what the remote control application is capable of, so I think this is worth a mention for those of you that might have thought nothing of it...

I've used the SE developer tools to customize a remote for winamp, easier to use than windows notepad!

I've also made a shortcut pointing to C:/WINDOWS/system32/shutdown.exe -s -t 5 -c "K750i Bluetooth remote command" which is a network command to shut down the computer after 5 seconds.

If you put the shortcut in the start menu somewhere, you can assign a shortcut key to execute it e.g. CTRL+ALT+0.

Which in turn you can program your remote to use on one of it's buttons.

Using Bluetooth with Symbian UIQ 3 SDK

Download the BT USB driver from Nokia
Install it as explained in the instructions and verify the COM port at which the BT dongle is available (using the sbt.exe tool from BT driver ZIP package)
Use the SDKConfig tool to set the UIQ 3 emulator BT port to the COM port found at the previous step.
Since the UIQ SDK is has a poor UI for more subtle Bluetooth configuration you need to find bt.bt.esk, usually in \UIQ3SDK\epoc32\release\winscw\udeb\Z\private\101f7989\ESock\bt.bt.esk

You should then mofify the [hci] section in the following manner:

hcidllfilename= hci_h4.dll // Here you need to use either hci_h4.dll or hci_usb.dll
port= 0 // COM1 = 0, COM2 = 1, .... etc. If using hci_usb.dll this number should not matter

Restart the EPOC emulator. You might need to go to the phone application and from the setting to choose "Phone On". After that the BT icon should appear in the emulator status bar.

Walkman Support with Flash Animations

First you should have SYSGFX Patch.
1.Collect the files which are of walkman skin in gfx folder.
2.Copy their names or name (if you want to have only one flash animation)
3.Open notepad and write in it
usb/other/gfx/back.swf or the directory where u have the gfx.
4.Save it as E86D.png.@ (Im using main background)
5.Connect your phone as file transfer.
6.Transfer the E86D.png.@ to gfx folder. (DONT DISCONNECT)
7.Now have a flash file and rename it to back.swf (We wrote it in the E86D.png.@)
8.Put the flash file in the gfx folder and disconnect the mobile.
9.Turn on phone and open walkman and you're done.

If you want to change the background again just delete the back.swf in gfx folder and place a new file with the same name.
I think you can also have .gif file as background just you need to do is.
edit the E86D.png.@ and write back.gif instead of back.swf and place a back.gif file in the gfx folder.

When you receive an email, you receive more than just the message. The email comes with headers that carry important information that can tell where the email was sent from and possibly who sent it. For that, you would need to find the IP address of the sender. The tutorial below can help you find the IP address of the sender. Note that this will not work if the sender uses anonymous proxy servers. Finding IP address in Hotmail 1. Log into your Hotmail account with your username and password. 2. Click on the Mail tab on the top. 3. Open the mail. 4. If you do not see the headers above the mail message, your headers are not displayed. This is one of the best cool tricks which i have found ever till now. I want to share it with all of the members of this community. Hope u guys like this trick.

How to create a cool wallpaper using MS paint.

Follow these methods.

1> Open MS paint.

(Go to accessories-> open paint)

2> Now click on Image tab-> Go to Attributes.

3> Select the value of width and hight at "2" and "2" that means create an image of 2 pixel by 2 pixel.

4>Then click on the view tab-> Zoom.

Select custom zoom set it at 800%

5> Now u can see a small square white box. Fill up the box according to

following ways.

a> Put black in the lower-left corner,

b> dark gray in the lower-right corner,

c> and light Grey in the upper-left.

6> Save it some place.

7> Right click on the desktop. Go to properties.

Who wants to delete "RUN"

I really don't know why someone could wish to remove RUN from START MENU, but if you're one of them, you can do that, too.

REGEDIT

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Double click on "NoRun" and change "ValueData" from 0 to 1.

Close Regedit, and restart computer.

How to censor/pixelate

If there are part of an image or something which you dont want others to see, you can pixelate them. For best understanding, it is to censor the image. Select the part of the image with the Lasso Tool (Shortcut key = Shift +L). After selecting the area, go to Filter in the menu bar and then to Pixelate, select Mosaic. You will get a new dialogue box where you can specify your own cell size. Your changes are previewed automatically and you’ll know when to press OK. (Normally enter 8-12 for small sized images). Please make sure your preview window is checked

How to invert the colour of a pic

You will find various inverted pictures on the net, which do look good when inverted। To see the original colour or to invert the colour of the picture, the easiest way is to open the picture with MSPaint or Adobe Photoshop. Press Ctrl+i and you’ll see the magic.

Rotate and Flip

To rotate a picture, follow the steps. Click Image on the menu bar > Rotate Canvas > you can choose whatever you like. Arbitrary means you can specify your own degree for the image to rotate. You can also flip the picture vertically or horizontally. Check it out by selecting Flip Horizontally or Flip Vertically.

To change the size of a picture

Many pictures comes with large size, for eg. 3000×2500 pixels. This will take a long time to open/load esp on the net. To change the size of the image, open the big-sized image with Adobe Photoshop. On the menu bar select Image, then Image Size. You’ll get a dialogue box where you can enter your own specifications. Please make sure that Constrain Proportion is checked, otherwise you’ll get a horrible figure. For eg, enter 600 in the width box, you dont have to manually enter the height. And make sure your measurements are in terms of pixels, which is easiest to understand. After you enter the size, press OK. Your picture is small now!!

Danger of "CTRL+C" on web

We do copy various data by ctrl+c for pasting elsewhere. This copied data is stored in clipboard and is accessible from the net by a combination of Javascripts and ASP.

Just try this:

1) Copy any text by 'ctrl+c'

2) Do not keep sensitive data (like passwords, reditcard numbers, PIN etc.) in the clipboard while surfing the web. It is extremely easy to extract the text stored in the clipboard to steal your sensitive information.

To avoid Clipboard Hack Problem, do the following:

1) In Internet Explorer, Go to Tools -> Internet options -> Security

2) Press Custom level.

3) In the security settings, select disable under Allow paste operations via script and click on 'OK. (Now the contents of your clipboard are safe.)

Most of you guys have forwarded your emails from other email services to gmail for convenience purpose, but did you know that you can reply from the gmail account with the email address you forwarded your email. You can display anther email address in the “From:” field instead of your gmail address.

- First Log in to your Gmail account on which you wish to add another address.

- Click “Settings” on the top of the page.

- Then select the “Account” tab and then click “Add another email address” in the “Send mail as:” section.

- Now add your Name and the email address you wish to add to gmail. You can specify a different email address for “reply-to” address if you’d like email replies to be delivered to other email account, such as Gmail.

- When done with the above step, click next and then click Send Verification to complete the process. Then Gmail will send a verification message to email address you typed in to verify that the account is yours and you would like to add it to gmail.

- Then open the email inbox of the email address you wished to add and click the link in the verification email sent by gmail or copy paste the verification code to gmail to confirm your request.

- When done with all the steps you are can customize your email address in the “From:” field whenever you want to compose an email.

This has really helped me cause i had to use 2 accounts and now i can use 2 account of my gmail. Hope it helps you guys too….

1 To remove it first do a search fo a file called "boot.ini" located in \Windows\ .

2. Open the file with Notepad and add "/noguiboot" after "/fastdetect".

Replace X by the drive name (c or d or e)

For example... for drive C:\

convert c:/fs:ntfs

now select a drive (c or d or e.......) right-click and propreties, then click on general and select "compress drive to save disk space" and press ok...no data will be damaged or removed.

now the main thing u have to do is :

1) go to "C:\WINDOWS" and there copy the "explorer.exe" and paste it on the desktop and rename it as ur name. for example: "sagar.exe"

2)now open the resource hacker that u have downloaded earlier.

click on file menu select open.

from the open menu select renamed file for example : "sagar.exe"

now from left side of resource hacker select "String Table" and then folder "37" then select select "1033" on clicking this some text will appear on right side of the resource hacker.

on the right side u will see some thing written as "start" now what u have to do just put ur name in place of start.

now compile it and save it.

3)Now cut the renamed file i.e "sagar.exe" from ur desktop and paste it in its original path. ie "C:\WINDOWS".

4) Now select "start menu" and then open run on that type "regedit".

5) On regeditor select "My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\microsoft\Windows NT\Currentversion\Winlogon"

now on the right side of the regeditor doubleclick "shell" then chane the "value data" as the modified file {for example:"sagar.exe"} and press ok.

6) Now restart ur system. u will feel gr8 to see ur hand work.

You can disable Dr Watson completely by deleting the AeDebug key. To re-enable it, type:

at the command prompt.

I found an interesting tutorial. You can hide files inside an innocent looking JPG image. The secretly created image file will open in any image viewer just like a normal file but if you open it with winrar you will find the hidden files. Pretty neat trick.Very few would be knowing it.

INTERNET ERROR CODES AND MEANING

Sometime you are browsing the internet and trying to open any website, your e-mail and any FTP sites , but you see different error codes there. You should be familiar with these error codes. You can solve these problems if you are well-known with the meaning of error codes.

400 = This is bad request error, First check you may be typing wrong URL name and server could not understand your request.

401 = You are trying to open any unauthorized access site or page. Check your username and password if you are trying to open any webpage.

402 = Payment Required Error

403 = You are trying to open any forbidden page and you are blocked by that domain.

404 = Here you are trying to open the webpage that was removed or re-named, also check the URL spelling.

408 = This is time out error. you should send the request with in time that the server set for you.

Windows XP uses a system called 'prefetch' to organize and preload some of the data necessary for commonly used applications and files. A folder called prefetch is used to store the information the operating system needs to carry out this operation.
After several months of use, the prefetch folder may become quite overloaded with older references to software and files that may no longer be in use.It's a good idea to manually empty the older files out of the prefetch folder every few months or so.
To do this: Navigate to 'c:\windows\prefetch' and delete all .
PF files that are older than a week or two

Here are some simple techniques to remove your temporary files from your hard drive. These temporary files if not cleared frequently, could take up a lot of space. But, if you are working with internet regularly or didn’t care much about your temporary files, you can keep them. Oh, btw, these temporary files makes your webpage loads faster and makes programs runs much faster, no doubt.

1. Start > Run > Type %temp% in the text field (including %). You can delete all the files from that folder. In case, a file is currently used by a running program, you will not be able to delete it. Do it at a later time, or when you stop every program that is running.

And just press the Up button from this folder and you will see a folder named “Temporary Internet Files”. Guess, you know what to do.

2. Start > Run > Prefetch : You can delete all the files from this folde
3. Start > Run > Temp : Same as prefetch.

4. You can search for a temporary files yourself by typing *.tmp in the Find files or folders. But this is risky.

To clear history, cache, cookies..etc.etc… you can do it easily from the browser itself. One recommendation, do defrag your hard drives frequently, at least once a week. Do Disk Cleanup. And you can have certain software for junk file removal and registry cleaner.

There is nothing special but... I like the way how David Faden can create this small tool which you can use to flip the text you typed. You can type anything you want and this tool will invert them.The flip text generator is a single page, single click service that flips or, in other words, inverts the text you type in as input. Also, since the encoding of the flipped text is UTF-8, it would display properly in most places. That is to say, there would not be any errors as in the case of the Japanese or Chinese language.

How to find the IP address of the sender in Gmail

Try to create a folder in Windows with either of these names--
"con" or "nul" or "Aux" or "Lpt1".
Windows will not let u create ....

Reason: all this correspond to some of the famous ports

>Lpt1 corresponds to printer and so on....

HOWEVER I FOUND A TRICK TO CREAT FOLDER "CON"

Here is a simple method..........
Rename folder from the right click option........
Now press alt and press 255...
press 255 frm the right sideof the key bords i.e., num pad....
where only numbers r given.....
now write con and then press enter.....huh!!
you ll see a con folder in ur pc
and also you can delete it easily

Give the number of rows and columns (as above picture has 2 columns and 2 rows )
Press Build and open

You have a lots of photos in some folder on your computer, all have numbers-names, and you want to name them like Holliday1.jpg, Holliday2.jpg, ... Don't need to do that one by one. You can do that automatically with this little trick.

Open that folder and chose View - Thumbnails

Left click on any picture and CTRL + A. That way you will select all files in that folder.

Right click on first pic and chose "Rename" from drop-down menu.

Windows XP will highlight name of that file and you will be able to name it. After filling the name, click somewhere outside, in white space. You're done. If you named firs file "Anything" all selected files will get names "Anything1", "Anything2", "Anything3", and so on.

Lots websites have disabled the right click function of mouse button..... it's really annoying.This is done so that you don't able to copy the(via right-click:>>save picture) thier photos or images or any goodies.

Unfortunately it disables all right click funtionality .You can enable it by clicking:
Tools>>internet option >>security tab>>custom level
scroll down to scripting section, set active scriting to disable
Click ok a couple of times .

You'll probably want to turn this back to "enable" when your done .

Go to the registry editor and navigate to the following place :

In the right hand pane for the Explorer key, create a new "DWORD" value named ViewNoDrive

Double click the new value and enter it as .......

for hiding A drive set value as 1 , for B its 2 and C its 4 and so on and for Z its 33554432

generally multiply it by 2 for the next alphabet to hide

Once done, reboot or log off and login in again. Then try double clicking the drive you made inaccessible.

You should receive a message stating that the drive cannot be accessed

HOW TO FIND UR IP ADRESS

To find your IP Address,

1. Go to Start —> Run

2. Type cmd

3. Command Prompt will open.

4. In that, type ipconfig /all

5. You will see your IP Address

This is an eyecatching tweak for people who would like to have some Hindi text in their signatures or who would like to scrap wishes in hindi. If you wanna type a message in Telugu/Hindi or some other desired language.. Here is the way!! No third party software is needed. This is all stuff to do with Microsoft word.

Open Microsoft word and select Symbol in insert menu. Select font as Mangal and subset as Devanagiri. Here u find all the characters that are required to type any alphabet.

Suppose if you want to type "अपुन अच्छा लडका है" Insert the following symbols in the order. Neglect + and <> signs. I just placed it for seperation.

अ + प + ु+न <> अ + च + ्+ छ + ा + ल + ड + क + ा <> ह +

While typing the characters, you will observe the related characters merging themselves. After typing the required message, just copy and paste the characters wherever you want. Soon after u paste the message.. u may notice blank squares appearing instead of message (in Googletalk window for example).. Dont worry.. The tweak works after you save it/send it.

If u wanna have ur profile name of Orkut in Hindi... U can do the similar thing... Just type the text in microsoft word. Edit your profile and paste the text there... You can also send the messages in Google Talk or Yahoo IMs.

Similarly.. use Gautami font for Telugu and Tunga font for Kannada. You should download Unicode fonts for other languages to enable this feature...

There are editors available which will do the same work for you. But, for small messages, this is useful.
